Hand Therapy Includes Electrical Stimulation

Steve’s rehabilitation includes hand therapy with a new Hand Rehabilitation System. The unit was fitted to his arm to electrically stimulate the nerves in his hand. With this device he was able to open his paralyzed hand and grasp some dice. Hopefully with repeated stimulation the brain will recreate new pathways to the nerves so Steve will be able to open and grasp his hand on his own. Please pray that the full function of his hand will return.

In order to use the Bioness hand rehabilitation system, we must go to the hospital where they have one of the units. It is possible for us to purchase one, but it cost around $6000 and insurance doesn’t pay for it. However, I did hear from another stroke survivor that his veteran’s insurance paid for his. The reason most insurances won’t pay is because they still consider hand rehabilitation systems as experimental. Hopefully one day that will change.

For now, I am being used as Steve’s hand rehabilitation system when I help him move his arm and force his fingers to open. I’m praying that with repeated use, the brain will create new pathways to the nerves in his arm and hand to make them work once again.
