Seizure Treatment is Working

Steve’s seizure treatment is working quite well. Today he saw his neurologist and the doctor was very surprised that Steve hadn’t had another seizure since the last time he saw him five months ago.  He knew Steve wasn’t taking the full dose of medication he prescribed, and he told us then that that low of a dose would definitely not prevent recurring seizures. (Steve is taking only one-fourth of the dose prescribed). The doctor also remembered that the reason for our decision was because of the side effects Steve experienced with the medication.

Of course I showed the doctor the natural remedy, Epi-Still, that Steve’s been taking. It’s a proven herbal epileptic seizure remedy and alternative epilepsy drug treatment. The neurologist never heard of such a thing and didn’t know of any of the ingredients. Most medical doctors are schooled and trained to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs, not natural medicine. So I wanted him to know that there is an alternative way to treat this condition.

If you remember from previous posts, Steve had three seizures within 3 months. The first one lasted 20-25 minutes and landed him in the hospital for three days.  He bit his tongue so severely that it took 10 days to heal. It looked like raw hamburger and he couldn’t chew for several days. That attack was really a doozy. It affected the motivational center of his brain, and set him back in his stroke recovery about 6 or 7 months. His coordination and balance were also affected and he felt dizzy as he walked. After that incident, Steve lost all desire to get better. He didn’t want to do any of his therapy and he lost all ambition. Depression set in as a result.

At the time of his hospitalization, the hospital neurologist wanted to treat him aggressively with Keppra XR, an anti-seizure med. Steve tried it for a few days, but it made him so drowsy and dizzy that he couldn’t function. After that we were hesitant to try any other anti-convulsant drugs.

The second seizure came about 5 weeks later. With that one Steve fell off a chair and hit his head on the wall, but it only lasted about 7 minutes. He wasn’t hurt bad, but he could have been.

The third convulsion came three weeks after the second one and it lasted about 6 minutes. He was still in bed and sound asleep. With both the first and third seizures Steve was sleeping and didn’t even know what happened.

Because the seizures were coming closer together, I thought it was imperative for Steve to give the medication a try again. (This was before we found the natural remedy Epi-Still). So Steve tried the lowest dose available of the anti-convulsant. This time it was the generic version of Keppra regular, not the XR. It made him a little sleepy, but he tolerated it well. A week later, I added Epi-Still three times a day. Together they’re working to keep Steve free from further seizures, and he’s slowly getting his motivation back.
