I was taking care of my mom in FL for the last 3 months and I live in Atlanta. My brother relieved me some when he came from California. My sister who lives near my mother did nothing. My husband is in Atlanta and taking care of his 2 sick parents by himself. Things have just shifted. My brother gave "tough love" to my sister and she's responding by helping some. I called my sister-in-law to tell her my husband needs help. I found that these siblings really do want to help...now they are and it's better for the whole family. And I'm catching up on my sleep this week! Clarissa,

It's hard enough to deal with stroke even when you have family support, so it must be extremely difficult for you without that extra help. Sometimes you have to make decisions that aren't easy, because you have no other choice. If your mother is eligible for Medicare or Medicaid, there might be other resources to help you including home health care. When she first had the stroke things looked good my moms story is much like yours as with most strokes it takes time. My mom can not talk she only does bable. She fell and broke her leg a year ago and has not been able to pick her self up again now she is addicted to opiates because of all of the pain in the leg and I think to just get out of her mind. I dont really know how to help her or my father who lives and takes care of her and also is disabled .I am the youngest of three and the only one who helps. I have two small kids and am ready to put my mom in a home as to not lose my father too.I really dont know anymore stroke is so hard to handle.
