Kathy, i foudn your story inspirational. My sory is grulling to say the lest. My husband at 57 had a massive stroke. He was a smoking of 30 years wiht not a good gene line. I tried to tell him what could happen but he thought he would be fine. So hard, went to bed on e night with all well, next day changed. Huband was a 6 figure guy, I was not but left tying to figure out how to handle a hugh cut in pay. That being said we have suvived, thanks be to God. The part that concerns me the most is my very thoughtful husband of the past seem to have filter when it comes to social behavior, very hard. He has a lot of other difficulities ; but that is a big one. He does not like to leave the house. Our life has changed soooo much for the worse it is hard to conform to the new life; I Definately am struggling afer 38 yrs,. of marriage. Almost embarrashed to ask but do you have any suggestings????

I too have been reading your blog. I had a stroke myself in December 2008, but I am fortunate to be able to write and have the use of my right hand. I started my own blog last month when I ran across yours, all of the things you speak about hit home. It's very difficult to explain to someone how a stroke effects you. It's something that I hope they never have to feel. That's what I tell my family and friends on a constant basis, but sometimes you just want to yell at them, and I do. I hope this year will bring better results for you then last year for that will bring hope for a better tomorrow. Best Wishes and Best of Luck, Ken

About the DNR. It seems that the hospital is quick to let patients die. My sister had a stroke and swelling on the brain and part of her skull removed. Within two days the doctors were telling the family that she would be a vegetable and maybe sit in a chair and drool. I am happy to say that only 4 months later she has her skull replaced and is taking therapy to walk. She has feeling in her left leg and feeling in part of her left arm. She is actually more quick wit than before. She does have a few quirks. But from a vegetable to a laughing and loving person, the quirks are minor. Everyday brings new hope and recovery.

In regard to your question about whether too much time has passed for your mother to improve, the answer is emphatically no. She can improve for many, many years in her stroke recovery. The most improvement is seen in the first 18 months after stroke, and then it slows down a bit. But as the stroke survivor continues to persevere in therapy, gradual progress will continue even up to 20 yrs. post stroke.

My mother suffered a massive stroke in November. Her side is greatly effected and she struggles with speech. She was discharged to a skilled nursing facility. The therapy was not aggressive and I feared she was getting too comfortable with her condition. I was able to get her into an inpatient rehab facility 2 days ago and the approach to therpay is radically different. I am praying she make more progress. She still isn't able to walk or use her right arm. Has too much time passed for her to improve?
